5 Breathtaking Nature Hikes Around Valencia: Trails That Clear Your Mind and Strengthen Your Sober Life

Why nature hikes are so powerful in sober recovery

When I first got sober, everything felt boring and empty at times. The old weekends full of noise and drinking were gone — but what came in their place? For me, it was nature. A good hike gives you endorphins without chemicals, space to think without distraction, and a sense of achievement that has nothing to do with alcohol.

At Sober Retreats Valencia, we build that in deliberately: Villa Torrent is already nestled in a peaceful valley, but the real magic happens when you step out the door and head into the mountains, gorges and waterfalls. No bars, no triggers — just fresh air, stunning views and your own thoughts finally going quiet.

Here are my top 5 favourite hikes in the area (all within 30–60 minutes' drive). They're sober-friendly: bring your own sparkling water with lemon, a journal, and enjoy the high that nature gives you.

Paraje Natural Municipal El Tello – Breathtaking views over Valencia and the sea

Close to Picassent and Llombai, about 30–40 minutes from Valencia. This is a green, hilly nature reserve with multiple trails. My favourite: the climb to the top of Pico Besori (around 360 metres high). After a beautiful ascent of 200–400 metres, you reach viewpoints overlooking the valley — all the way to the Mediterranean Sea on clear days.

Distance: 5–10 km (circular, depending on which loop you choose) – medium difficulty. Sober twist: Stop at the top, breathe deeply and visualise how far you've already come.

Ruta de las Cascadas near Buñol – Breathtaking waterfalls and refreshing cool

Buñol (approx. 40 min drive) has trails like the Ruta de Aguas or routes to Cueva Turche and Cascada de las Palomas. You walk through lush gorges, along rivers, and arrive at refreshing waterfalls with natural pools. The sound of running water is healing — as if it's flushing the old noise out of your head.

Distance: 4–8 km, medium, with swimming spots in summer. Sober tip: Sit by a waterfall and journal: "What am I letting go of today?" It's a metaphor for sober living — water cleanses, without you having to drink anything that harms you. Combine it with a visit to Buñol Castle for some extra history.

Ruta de los Puentes Colgantes in Chulilla – Suspension bridges and turquoise water like Southeast Asia

This is pure adventure: deep gorges carved by the Turia river, towering cliffs, turquoise pools (Charco Azul!) and two thrilling suspension bridges. It feels exotic, but it's only 45–60 minutes from Valencia.

Distance: 7–12 km (often 10 km round trip to the dam), 300–500 metres of elevation, medium difficulty. Sober twist: Cross each bridge as a symbol: "I'm stepping over my fears, one step at a time." By the turquoise water, I breathe in and out deeply — a natural breathing exercise that calms cravings. Go on a weekday morning for peace and quiet; it can get busy.

Ruta de las 3 Cascadas in Anna – Picturesque waterfalls and mystical trails

Anna (approx. 50 min drive) is home to the Route of the Three Waterfalls: Gorgo Gaspar, Cascada de los Vikingos and Gorgo de la Escalera. Green paths, crystal-clear water, small lakes (Albufera de Anna) and pools to sit beside. Lush, quiet and completely off the beaten track — a hidden paradise.

Distance: approx. 6–8 km circular, medium (with steps and single tracks), 2–3 hours. Sober tip: Stop at each waterfall for a short moment of gratitude: "What am I grateful for in my sober life?" The sound and the surroundings make it easy to stay present. Ideal for reflection during your retreat.

Practical tips for sober hiking around Valencia

  • Best season: Spring and autumn (not too hot, beautiful light).

  • What to bring: Good hiking shoes, at least 2 litres of water, sugar-free snacks, sunscreen, a hat, journal/pen, and a power bank.

  • Staying sober: Avoid stops in villages with lots of bars; focus on a picnic in nature instead. Go with a buddy if you're expecting cravings.

  • Safety: Check the weather forecast (flood risk in rain), download offline maps (AllTrails or Komoot work great).

These hikes have helped me make sober living feel not boring, but rich and adventurous. They're right on the doorstep of Villa Torrent — perfect as a day trip during your retreat. Do you already have a favourite trail in the area?
